Sun-kissed skin is incredibly beautiful, and airbrush tans are a wonderful alternative to natural tanning or tanning beds. They’re safe, temporary, and allow you to switch up your look in an instant.
Since airbrush tans are temporary, they don’t last forever. They typically last about a week, but you can prolong your tan if you take care of it. Here’s how:
Be clean and exfoliated before your appointment.
Clean, fresh skin tans better than dirty, flaky skin. You’ll get a much more even tan on freshly exfoliated skin, and it will last much longer because the most recent layer of dead skin cells will be removed.
Avoid water for 12 hours after tanning.
Don’t take a dip in the pool or shower for at least 12 hours after you get your tan. You need to let it sink in and develop, and if you get it wet too soon you may end up washing it away.
Stay hydrated and moisturized.
Your body needs to be moisturized from the inside out to prolong your tan. Drink the daily-recommended amount of water and use body moisturizers. Steer clear of oil-based moisturizers, though, as they can cause your tan to break down and slip right off. Simple, natural, and basic moisturizers are best.
Don’t rub your skin with a towel after a shower.
Your skin is delicate after a shower, and so is your tan. Instead of rubbing away water after a bath or shower, blot it with your towel. It’s gentler on your skin, and gentler on your tan.
Limit exposure to water and heat.
The more heat and water your tan is exposed to, the quicker it will fade. Try to only shower once a day and limit swimming and saunas. The cooler the water you use, the less it will strip your tan (plus, cool water is great for your hair).
Continue to exfoliate.
Gently exfoliate your skin every three days or so. This will keep the dead skin off and make your tan fade more evenly and naturally, rather than going incredibly patchy. Skip any oil-based exfoliators, though, as they can make your tan go streaky.
